We’re setting new standards in trust
The global farming industry is under the spotlight with questions being asked about sustainability, ethics and its impact on diversity. To thrive, it must win trust and we believe that transparency is key to that trust.
By being transparent about our environmental, social and product performance we will build trust with our stakeholders and consumers. We view that as the best way to correct misinformation and inform people about how we are leading real change in our industry.
To justify that trust, we ensure that our sustainability data is audited by third parties and reported according to global standards such as the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). We are also building transparency throughout our food chain, so everything is traceable and the exemplary way we operate, is visible at every stage the salmon’s journey from farm to fork.
Creating and appreciating amazing food is a two-way street. Every piece of salmon we sell has a unique QR code that allows the consumer to retrace its footsteps and find out where it originated from. This level of provenance gives real confidence that the food consumers are eating has led a healthy life within a thriving ecosystem and made its way to them as efficiently and sustainably as possible.
One of the key strengths of owning the supply chain from beginning to end is our ability to maintain visibility, in depth, at every point along its length. It means that when there is a problem we can get to it faster and address it more quickly.
Taking inspection to new levels
Our factories all operate robust quality and inspection regimes, undertaking visual checks and routinely taking random samples and examining them for defects and other quality issues.
While this is in line with industry best practice, we are now setting a higher standard that will deliver 100% accuracy. The new scanners we have developed, will give greater insight and more accurate data, empowering us to go right back through the food chain to establish the causes and potential solutions to any defects or deficiencies. Our ability to examine every aspect of the food chain means we can accurately determine whether those causes are genetic, feed or medicine-related or the result of conditions or events on the farm.
Being transparent is only a risk if you are doing something badly
There are several important ways in which we actively demonstrate our commitment to global sustainability and the contribution we are making to a healthier planet. Our appointment of a dedicated Chief Sustainability Officer is central to our commitment to provide the world with a clear picture of our environmental and social impacts and how we are actively addressing and mitigating them.
We’re equally transparent to investors in our company and our produce
Our Annual Report clearly sets out an integrated and open analysis of our group’s financial results detailing environmental, product and social performance.
Included in the annual report is The Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) Report. This summarises climate-related risks and opportunities in accordance with TCFD recommendations.
Our Industry Handbook provides financial analysts, investors and other stakeholders with deep and honest insight into the salmon industry.
Our CDP (formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project) report provides Mowi’s annual carbon accounting covering scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions and details risks and opportunities linked with climate change.
For all ASC certified farms – of which we have more than any other salmon producer. We also disclose key metrics related with our ASC certification on our own ASC Dashboard.
The Green Bond Impact report summarises the projects and the environmental impact of projects which are eligible to be funded from the proceeds of green bonds.
We also publicise our Global Compact Report. This provides an assessment of how Mowi is adopting the UN Ten Principles in the areas of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption and reveals the actions we are taking to deliver on the Sustainable Development Goals.
At mowi.com we openly share our group policies on a range of environmental and social sustainability topics, such as sourcing raw materials for feed, fish welfare, climate change, responsible plastic use and human rights
Transparency from plate right back to egg
We believe that consumer trust is imperative for all foods, especially at a time when so much emphasis is being placed on their purity, safety and sustainability. So, we are trialling a system that allows many of our consumers to examine the supply chain in detail, so they fully understand the care that has gone into their food and the journey along which it has come. We are in a unique position to do this because we control the whole supply chain from end to end.
All our salmon comes from farms which are certified according to GSSI-recognised sustainability standards and all our processing plants have GFSI-recognised certifications.
